Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Baseline Year: 2020
Additional Details relating to the Baseline Emissions calculations.
Historic baseline calculation provided by Decarbonisation Consultants (Dr Gillian Alker). The report notes that ‘VU Online rent a serviced office where heating is supplied within the rental contract. Therefore, emissions associated with heating are dealt with in Scope 2. There were no business mileage expenses claims in Financial year 2019/2020, therefore it has been assumed that emissions due to transport fuels were negligible in this year.’
The absence of vehicle mileage was due to the COVID-19 pandemic during which all off site meetings were suspended and all staff worked from home.

Emissions reduction targets

In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets.

We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years to 4.114 tCO2e by 2029. This is a reduction of 29.41%. This is a substantial reduction based on the minimum reduction target (yellow line) as we are aiming to reach net zero by 2040. We have also set our projected targets from this year as such substantial reductions were achieved in 2021 and 2022.

Progress against these targets can be seen in the graph below:

Carbon Reduction Projects

Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the 2020 baseline. The carbon emission reduction achieved by these schemes equate to 10.02 tCO2e, a 63.22%ge reduction against the 2020 baseline and the measures will be in effect when performing the contract.

We made the decision to leave our permanent office space in 2020, moving the majority of meetings online. This significantly reduced emissions from heating and lighting. We have encouraged staff to shift to renewable energy at home wherever possible and have provided financial incentives to do so.

We have gained B-Corp certification and updated our Articles of Association to reflect B-Corp principles.

We have significantly reduced the amount of paper that we use. By default, we do not print proposals or client reports.

In the future we hope to implement further measures such as:

Annually reviewing our suppliers to assess their carbon emissions and change suppliers where scope 3 emissions can be reduced.
